2023 is a wrap | 2024 is promising!
 

Dear Save Oceanside Sand Community,

As you know, Save Oceanside Sand is dedicated to restoring our beaches and protecting the coastal habitat.
Wrapping up 2023, as an SOS supporter, you have a lot to be proud of! Due to our continued advocacy for sustainable sandy beaches, our city leaders and staff continue the journey toward a solution of sand replenishment and retention for our coastline. 
Phase Two of the Sand Replenishment and Retention Pilot Project – RE:BEACH (the coastal resilience design competition) completed three design phases and public workshops. Through these workshops, we learned about potential solutions for our shoreline from three competitors as well as the RE:BEACH team.  
What lies ahead?  
The RE:BEACH jury deliberated on the 14th of December and provided a recommended winning design to the RE:BEACH team.  
This recommendation will be developed further and presented by the city staff at a Council Workshop on January 31st, then the approved design will be refined, and then to permitting, on the way to construction.  Learn more here. The strength of SOS has always been its dedicated team of volunteers. 

Without you, we would not have accomplished so much in the areas of outreach and education, Citizen Science, plus influencing & supporting the City of Oceanside in moving toward a solution to restore and protect our beach habitat!  
I’d like to recognize some of the amazing volunteers in some of the key committees of SOS who are out there making things happen:

The Pop-up Committee provides education and outreach regarding the conditions on our shoreline and potential solutions.
This team is enthusiastically led by Dirk Ackema, with core team members Joey Eberhardt, Tom Launder, Steve Roberts, Charlie Bowen, Steve Maschue, Bob Walker, and Nick Ricci. You’ll find these dedicated volunteers at the beach pop-up every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, engaging and educating the public.  

Our Citizen Science Committee is led by Serena Milne, with contributing team members Luka Spear, Louie Oliveria, Gracie Williams, Gordon Stone, Bob Walker & Bob Ashton. This team conducts monthly beach profile data collection along our entire 3.7 miles of coastline. The data they collect is being used to study our shoreline, establishing baseline data, along with the study and analysis of sand movement by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the US Army Corps of Engineers and other shoreline engineering firms such as GHD.

Another committee established this year is the Outreach Liaison Committee led by Toni DeProsperis. Toni is coordinating outreach between SOS and other citizen-based coastal organizations like ours to foster collaborative relationships and build a support network, so we can work together better to address and solve our collective coastal resilience issues. 

Other key volunteers who keep us on task with our mission, meet with City officials, coordinate efforts, and run SOS are SOS Board of Directors and Elected Officers, also all volunteers! 
The BoD is comprised of Matt Caulfield, Bob Walker, John Tenaglia, Nick Ricci, Steve Maschue and Bob Ashton. 
Our elected officers are: Treasurer, Tracy Torres, Secretary, Steve Maschue, Vice President Bob Walker, and President Bob Ashton. 

Other noteworthy contributors whose invaluable support significantly boost our effectiveness are Tim Mensalvas for marketing and graphic design, Elise Wetherell for marketing, graphic and web design, and Lynn AbatΓ©-Johnson for marketing and community outreach.    

While we have created amazing momentum toward solutions to our shoreline conditions, our work must continue, full speed ahead. In fact, now more than ever, our ongoing and consistent support is extremely vital as solutions are considered for approval and permitting.
You are a crucial part of it all.

We have planned a full year ahead of continued outreach, education and expansion of our committees, including our Student Intern Program, and increasing our engagement of elected and governing entities with a laser-focus on supporting and approving solutions to restore Oceanside coastal resilience. 

The strength of SOS is in its engaged and involved community!
