Save Oceanside Sand Advocates, We are celebrating a big milestone as the City Council has voted to fund a Sand Retention and Replenishment Study. The study will be contracted out to GHD Group, a professional engineering firm with extensive experience designing coastal improvement projects. The professional services contract will study our coastline dynamics to develop a shoreline model which will determine sand transport to evaluate three options for retention and replenishment. GHD will engage scientists at Scripps Institute and local stakeholders to develop solutions which will consider successful projects built worldwide. This is a very important first step towards restoring our beaches, thank you City Council and Public Works Director Kiel Kroger!
S.O.S. advocates turned out in force, while socially isolating, to voice their public support. Seventy nine members wrote (or copied) emails to convince the Council to approve the project with a unanimous vote. Our public awareness and involvement will continue to be important as the project takes shape and seeks various permits and approvals. Let's keep up the pressure until we restore our beaches.
!S.O.S.Oceanside! is planning to have a public meeting Tuesday May 19, and will discuss details of the Sand Retention and Replenishment study. We would like to have the meeting at Bagby's, but may resort to an online zoom chat with all interested members logging in at 6pm. We'll wait to hear from public officials before we make an announcement.
