Dear Save Oceanside Sand Advocates,Show your support for Oceanside’s Coastal Zone Management plan by recommending that the California Coastal Commission approve the Oceanside Coastal Dune Restoration pilot project permit application. The deadline for such feedback prior to the hearing is Thursday August 21st. The project is important because: It shows state and federal grant agencies that Oceanside will implement coastal management projects when awarded grants. It shows that the City will try coastal management techniques being recommended by those agencies. It helps Oceanside to satisfy the requirements of CA SB272 so that our City is prioritized for funding of future coastal resiliency projects (e.g. RE:BEACH).
The Dune pilot project is funded by a $56,876 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. On 12/20/23, Oceanside’s City Council unanimously approved accepting the Oceanside Coastal Dune Restoration Project grant funds. The initial portion of this small pilot project will start at North Harbor Beach. A brief description of this project follows.
Coastal dune restoration involves techniques to rebuild or enhance existing systems, which are crucial for coastal protection, habitat preservation, sand retention and other ecosystem services. These techniques include adding sand, planting vegetation, and using engineered solutions like fencing to trap sand. The primary goal is to stabilize dunes and facilitate natural dune creation processes. The Oceanside Coastal Dunes Restoration Pilot Project, proposed at Harbor Beach, San Luis Rey and North Strand beaches, will restore coastal dune habitat using green engineering techniques. The dune restoration proposed in these locations will showcase the benefits of having dunes on the back beach on a small scale, which may be useful to inform future coastal management planning efforts. As vegetated dunes help stabilize sand on the back beach, they become a natural form for sand retention. Additionally, with the natural increase in beach elevation, dunes provide coastal flood protection.
