SOS will have a public community meeting June, 7th 2023, at 6:00 PM at Bagby Beer Co. in Oceanside

Come early and enjoy dinner and/or a beverage. We have a great meeting agenda providing updates on the Oceanside Coastal Management efforts, SOS updates and an amazing guest speaker:

Come out and join us as we listen to our Guest Speaker - Dr. Reinhard “Ron” Flick!

Reinhard Flick retired as Staff Oceanographer and Oceanography Program Manager from California State Parks, Divisions of Boating and Waterways and Natural Resources in 2020. He is one of the founders of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Center for Coastal Studies, and continues as a Research Associate at SIO, and a consulting coastal oceanographer.

Ron began his studies of nearshore processes at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as an undergraduate in the summer of 1969. He later earned a Ph.D. in Oceanography from SIO.

• His studies include tidal, waves, tides, sea level, surf zone turbulence, coastal flooding, and beach and cliff erosion.

• His sea-going, field efforts, include deep-field camping on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica.

• He has lectured extensively and mentored and supported high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. 

• He has authored/co-authored over 80 scientific works including several book chapters, and the 1997 World Book Encyclopedia entry on Tides.

Ron was born in Germany and grew up in New York City. He is a certified SCUBA diver, sailing instructor, 100-ton Coast Guard licensed Master, and amateur radio operator (K6REF).

Volunteer with SOS

In support of SOS goals this year, the following committees are being established and or expanding. We need skilled and interested volunteers as SOS team members to participate in these committees. If interested, please send a short note/email to hello@sosoceanside.com 

Committees Needing Volunteers:

• Digital Marketing - Grow our marketing strategy, SOS web design/updates, media outreach, etc.

• Events - Saturday in person pop-up at the pier and other local events

• Supporter/Sponsor/Fundraising - Engaging citizens, businesses, and others in support of the SOS mission

• Citizen Science - Assisting and conducting data collection on our shoreline. Data is provided to scientists and engineers to understand the problem better and develop sound solutions.
