It's unanimous, our City Council has launched an effort to restore our beaches! On October 9, 2019 the City Council members all agreed to amend the City General Fund and direct staff to determine the cost for a sand retention study. Kiel Kroger led off the discussion with a staff presentation on Oceanside sand history. Several SOS members including Dirk Ackema, Bob Aston, Matt Stephens, Nick Ricci and Steve Maschue all provided compelling statements to inspire a sand study. Additional speakers, Surfrider rep and local Oceanside citizens also provided statements with concerns about hard structures and their potential negative impact on beach sand retention, surf breaks etc. A common theme is we all agree the beach sand retention solution must be supported by sound engineering and scientific data. Council Members Jack Feller and Ryan Keim led the charge in the discussion that if we wait for the US Army Corps of Engineers for a solution, we will be waiting forever. Mayor Peter Weiss then proposed a motion which was seconded by Jack Feller and unanimously approved by city council directing staff to provide information on the cost of a feasibility study for sand retention solutions. This would provide the council with the information to amend the Oceanside Capital Improvement Program(CIP) to provide the funding to execute the study moving towards a solution. This is the first step as well as a huge victory on the road to sustainable sandy Oceanside beaches!
